I've been playing single-player against the AI for a many years (going back to the original AoK) and played my first multiplayer game today on Steam.

I'm certainly not a very good player, but not a terrible one either - I always build a good-sized economy with 100+ villagers and can execute basic strategies like fast castle, booming, a couple of types of rushes, even slinging my teammates in AI games. It was 3v3 RM on Green Arabia with 2 players rated 1650 on each team, plus me on one team and a 1500 player on the other team. I'm used to playing against the AI on normal game speed, but for this game they used the fast game speed setting, and I found it really difficult to multitask at this speed.I spawned on the same flank as the 1500 guy and actually did pretty well for a while, destroying his initial base and starting to push his pocket. But on the other flank my teammates were losing and they kept frantically signaling for help. When I sent some units that way to help, I got countered on my own flank and ended up losing my forward.

So then I started focusing on my own flank again (to avoid losing my whole base) and my teammates just got wiped out on their side. According to the chat, they were obviously frustrated and angry with me.I actually consistently had the highest score on my team and most units killed (on either team) but we lost anyways basically because I was a bad teammate who only played on my own flank and wasn't able to help my team. Obviously I have a lot to learn about multiplayer and tons of room to improve, but I'm wondering if this fast game setting is an anomaly or is it something that I'll have to get used to?. No you're right, normal speed is normal, there's too much to do in the game than fast speed allows you to manage. It's not THAT common but you still have to keep an eye out whenyou join lobbies. If you REALLY don't like it (and i wouldn't blame you if you did) you can always host your own lobbies and tell anyone wanting you to play on fast to fuck off. With regards to the game your teammates sucked thats not your fault. From the sounds of it you played it fine. If you kill their flank and start pressuring the pocket, you're drawing pressure away from the other flank unless their pocket doesn't notice/doesn't care. This means your teammates SHOULD be able to 2v1 or 1.5v1 the other flank - if not you're fucked anyway.

It's probably more to do with your pocket being late to help / helping the wrong side which lost the game. As youget better you realize all the things you should be doing, and then realize you cannot do those tasks on fast. Once you learn more, normal speed is plenty fast and you still cannot micro everything perfectly.A weaker player likely won't rebuild lumber camps, scout properly, re-arrange villies who go path to an inneficient resource pile, keep low queues to maximize production, all the while scouting and harassing the opponent properly and not building an army to have it sit around and do nothing.
